Important note - Safety eyes can be pulled from knitted fabric by a determined child. I don't use safety eyes on any toy I give to a child.
Safety eyes can look great and are easy to fit (just follow the instructions on the packet). This is my top tip for giving your toy some personality when using safety eyes. The toy in the example is my dreamy fox sample, knitted in beautiful yarn from Dream in Color.
1. Insert the safety eyes following the manufacturer's instructions.
2. Thread a sewing needle with string thread. I use a doll making needle and upholstery thread. Put the needle into the head at a spot which will be hidden, (for example, where the head will join the body) and back out behind one of the eyes. Keep hold of the loose end of the thread when you do this.
3. Put the needle back into the head a stitch along behind the eye and bring it back out near the initial entry point.
4. Repeat for the second eye. Turn the head over and pull hard on the two ends of the threads until you are happy with the set of the eyes. Tie the threads in a knot.
5. Admire the result.
